STEM Projects
Motion and Forces
Through a variety of hands on centers, students will build on what they learned in 2nd Grade regarding Forces and extend this into non-contact (magnetic) and electrical forces. They will learn about the different poles of a magnet and also how positive and negative charges interact. They also learned about electrical circuits (series and parallel) and how to make a bulb light and how to create circuits using LittleBits. They then used what they had learned to make light-up LED cards. As a final project, they created musical instruments using the Makey Makey Board and some very simple supplies. Below are some videos they created that show their instruments.

Coding
Students will learn the foundations of coding. We will be using the code.org site. Students will participate in both hands-on activities and computer-based activities. The hands-on activities will help students make the connection between coding and everyday activities.

Robotics
Students will use the foundation that they have obtained from the coding to code robots that were generously purchased by the School District to support this initiative. Robotics are seen by many as one of the key components of a STEM program and we are excited to be able to provide this opportunity to our students. Final Project - As an Engineer, students will program their robot to complete and everyday or futuristic task that helps mankind.

Weather & Climate
Through a variety of hands on activities and investigation, students will learn about weather's impacts on our world. They will learn about different weather systems and why our world has different weather phenomena in different locations. Final Project - Investigate a weather phenomena and design a way to demonstrate this phenomena to their peers.

3D Design
Students will learn the fundamentals of 3D design. We will learn how to design using 3D imaging. I am VERY excited to announce that the School District has also purchased two 3D printers. We will be testing how effectively they both work during the upcoming school year. Final Project - Groups of students will design something that they think could be sold in our school store. We will print 1 design from each class based on student votes and then this item will be offered for sale to the rest of the school. Students will "purchase" the best product and the winning team will receive a special prize.

Homework
Throughout the school year, students may be required to perform a family survey or complete some research for a project. This will not be frequent and will be for only a couple of projects. If homework is assigned, the details will be available here and their homework will be documented on their Google Classroom account.
